Ten Things I Was Thankful For in 2016

  1. A. It's cliché, but it's so true. Being able to spend the year with A was its greatest blessing. He made the day to day sweeter and brought my sing-songy silly self back from the land of the bitter. Life is brighter with him, and if I know one thing, it's that I love him more than I even know how to say. 
  2. Family (but really, my Grandma). Slowing down let me do what I'd been neglecting to do for the past few years, thinking I needed to spend my every waking moment alone in my room studying, and let me spend more time with my grandmother. She's been my rock since the day I was born, and I am grateful for the time we've been able to spend together baking and talking this year. 
  3. Food. I gave up feeling I needed to be as thin as possible in 2016, and I learned to live again. Food is amazing, and feeling free to enjoy eating is beautiful. A cooked for me, I baked, and we went out to eat, and oh will I think back to all those burgers and that amazing pumpkin bread when I think back to 2016. 
  4. Friends. Between my international witch coven and my Geneva circle, I was very well-surrounded in 2016. I got to travel to see friends abroad, and I got to spend time with those nearby. It was wonderful, and I hope I'll never isolate myself like I did before because life is so much better because of all of them. 
  5. Sleep.  talked about sleep a bit the other day (and then again on tumblr), and oh am I glad I managed to embrace sleeping again. Those 8-9 hours make anxiety so much easier to deal with. 
  6. Cuddles. I used to dream about what it would be like to have someone to cuddle back in the day, and I'm happy to say that reality has surpassed all of those dreams. Here's to comfy pajamas and duvets and watching Friends on Netflix. 
  7. Dodo. He may be better known on Instagram, but Dodo's my family dog. He's seven years old and stubborn as can be, but he's such a joy to have around. Plus, this year brought him closer to A, and that alone was one of my favorite things to see this year. 
  8. Burgers. This goes with 3. but oh did I eat a lot of burgers in the second half of 2016. I finally accepted that the quasi-vegetarian life was not working for me (really, for my health), and I woke up to the fact that Geneva has quite a few amazing burger places. My low blood pressure and consequent vertigo is grateful for this change.
  9. A's Family. This is maybe forward technically still rather early on, but I've grown so fond of A's family over the past year. They deal with life in such an honest but loving way, and they've opened my eyes to the fact that beyond what we love to say in America, not every family is dysfunctional. Some are even well-balanced and supportive, and I'm so grateful that I've gotten to know one that is just that. I look forward to seeing more of them in 2017. 
  10. My Old Train Pass. I had this amazing train pass for the first eleven months of the year that let me take the train for free in the evenings, and I definitely took advantage of it (though not as much as A and I had hoped... so much for those trips around Switzerland we didn't take). I'm sad I'm too old for it now...
